Tips To Capturing The Perfect Headshot

What makes a perfect headshot? It takes the right lighting, outfit, posture and angle to create a perfect corporate headshot. Well, these are just some of the many factors that influence the creation of a perfect headshot. While there are many elements that go into the making of a headshot, we will delve into key elements that can decide the success or failure of your photo session. Understand What Message The Client Wants to Convey When taking a headshot, pay attention to the message the client wants to convey. Do they want to look serious and business-like in their approach for the headshot? Or do they want to convey a casual look that does not undermine their professionalism? Ask your client and guide them on the outfit they could choose for the headshot. If you’re looking for a serious look, you cannot experiment with the facial expressions or postures. However, if you’re looking for a fun, relaxed look, you can get creative with expressions and angles. Ant Pruitt said in a recent article on how to master the headshot: “Headshots are seen on LinkedIn profiles, Twitter profiles, and business cards. All three of these platforms have varying degrees of importance and professionalism. Feel free to ask your client or model where the headshots will be displayed, as well as what message the client wants to convey to those viewing the image.” Shoot In Soft, Natural Lighting Lighting is another key element that can influence the outcome of your photo session. Plan to capture photographs in the early morning hours or late evening hours. The lighting is best in these timings and you can enjoy beautiful compositions. You can also avoid harsh shadows if you schedule your photo session in these timings. In a recent article on DIY for a LinkedIn headshot: “Once you have the perfect outfit, plan to take your photo in optimal lighting. Natural, soft lighting is key for taking any portrait. You can find soft lighting early in the morning, an hour before sunset or anytime on a cloudy day. (As a general rule of thumb, avoid the harsh sunlight in the middle of the day.) Soft lighting is diffused, so it doesn’t create hash shadows or reflections on your face.” Knowing the purpose of the headshot and what the subject wishes to convey can go a long way in guiding the person for the photo session. Shooting in soft, natural lighting can help you achieve optimum lighting for your headshots. Hope this article will help you capture better headshots. What makes a perfect headshot?
